What to check before an AI reads your Apple Mail

Six questions decide it, and the first one settles most of it: can the tool send mail as you? Macuse and LMCP can, Pomeroy cannot, and iMCP has no Mail service at all.

Six questions decide this, and the first settles most of it: can the tool send mail as you? If you want your assistant to write and send replies, that points at Macuse or LMCP. If you would rather it could only read, that points at Pomeroy, and iMCP is out whichever way you answer, because it has no Mail service at all.

I should say plainly that I built Pomeroy, so this is an interested party's checklist. Every fact about another tool was checked against its own site on 3 September 2026, each one has a comparison page here with its sources listed, and where another tool is the better answer this post says so.

How I put this list together

These six questions are the rows this site already compares every Mac tool on, narrowed to the app most people connect first. Each is answered with the five tools this site holds checked facts about, iMCP, Macuse, LMCP, apple-mcp and Pomeroy, and nothing else. The order is the order you can answer them in: the first two are about what the tool does, the next two about your Mac and your assistant, and the last two about living with it afterwards.

The six things to check before you connect your mail

  • Can it send as you? Start here, because a sent message cannot be taken back. Macuse sends mail and messages. LMCP sends and replies in Mail, Outlook, Messages, Teams, Slack and WhatsApp. Pomeroy has no send action anywhere: it searches and reads, and cannot send, reply or forward. Pick a tool that cannot send if you want that decision to stay with you. Not for you if you wanted your assistant to answer mail while you are away, where Macuse or LMCP is the honest answer.
  • Does it cover Mail at all? Not all of them do, which catches people out. iMCP covers 8 services, Calendar, Contacts, Location, Maps, Messages, Reminders, Shortcuts and Weather, with no Mail and no Notes. Macuse covers nine Apple apps, LMCP 188 or more tools across the Apple apps plus Outlook, Teams, Slack and cloud drives, and Pomeroy 9 Apple apps with Mail among them. Pick on the app you actually want first. iMCP is not for you if Mail is the reason you are here.
  • Which AI assistants does it reach, and from where? Two of these reach off your Mac and two do not. Macuse lists sixteen clients and reaches ChatGPT and claude.ai on the web through Remote Access, which runs over your own Tailscale network. LMCP lists nine and reaches the web through an optional cloud relay. iMCP works with Claude Desktop and any MCP client that runs a local command. Pomeroy sets itself up in Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, LM Studio, Kiro, Cherry Studio, Cline, AnythingLLM, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot CLI and OpenCode in one click and in any other client on the same Mac from a configuration it copies for you, 24 assistants in all, with no relay at all. Pick one that stops at your Mac if you want your mail to have one fewer way out. Not for you if you read your mail from ChatGPT on the web.
  • Which macOS does it need? Macuse and LMCP run on macOS 13 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. Pomeroy needs macOS 15 or later and iMCP needs macOS 15.3, so an older Mac narrows the field to two with no way around it. Pick Macuse or LMCP if you are on macOS 13 or 14. Neither Pomeroy nor iMCP is for you there.
  • What leaves your Mac, and how would you know? All of them keep the contents of your mail on your Mac, so the difference is what else they send and what you can check. LMCP sends a heartbeat about every five minutes carrying its version, your macOS version, CPU type and a hashed machine identifier, and records install events with your approximate location. Macuse states that everything stays on your Mac, with no cloud and no telemetry of your content, and is closed source, so that is a claim rather than something you can check. iMCP is open source under the MIT licence, so what it does with your data is there to read. Pomeroy makes a licence check, an update check and four pseudonymous usage counts that carry nothing from your apps, all listed on the privacy policy, with a test that fails if the code and that page disagree. Pick the one you can verify in the way you prefer, by reading code or reading a list. None is for you if you want no network requests at all.
  • Is anyone still looking after it? apple-mcp was the default answer for a year and was archived on 1 January 2026. It is read-only now: no fixes for new macOS releases, no security patches and no answers to issues. iMCP's last release was 1.4.1 on 7 May 2025 and 34 issues are open, one asking about the project's future; work started again in September 2026 after a quiet year. Macuse, LMCP and Pomeroy are actively developed. Pick something maintained if you want your mail to keep working after the next macOS release. apple-mcp is not for you unless you are happy to fix it yourself.

How do I check a tool this list does not cover?

Ask it the same six questions, in the same order, and make it answer them on its own site rather than in a review. Two of them do most of the work: whether it can send in your name, and what it sends off your Mac.

A good answer names actions rather than adjectives. "Reads and searches your mail, cannot send" tells you what you need; "full mail integration" does not. If a tool will not say whether it can send, treat that as a yes.

Can my AI assistant send email for me?

With Macuse or LMCP, yes: both send and reply in Mail. With Pomeroy, no, and that is deliberate rather than unfinished. There is no action for sending, replying or forwarding, so your assistant cannot be talked into one however you phrase the request. If you want a reply written rather than sent, any of them can do that: your assistant drafts the words and you press send yourself.

Is it safe to let an AI assistant read my mail?

It is about as safe as pasting the relevant email into a chat, because that is close to what happens. The tool reads your mail on your Mac and hands the result to your assistant, where it becomes part of your conversation. The part you control is what you switch on: in Pomeroy, Mail starts switched off, macOS asks before anything is read, and you can switch it off again at any time. The Apple Mail page lists what an assistant can and cannot do there, line by line.

What Pomeroy cannot do

Pomeroy cannot send. There is no action that sends mail, a message, a reply or an invitation, and none that deletes anything in any app. In Mail it cannot delete, move or archive a message, or mark one read or unread, so your mailbox stays exactly as you left it.

It cannot read your screen or click around an app for you either: there is no Computer Use, and it never asks for Accessibility. It reaches only assistants running on the same Mac, so ChatGPT and claude.ai on the web are out, and it needs macOS 15 or later. If any of those is the thing you needed, one of the others above is your answer, and I would rather you knew now.

How do I set it up?

Which should you pick?

If you want your assistant to answer mail as well as read it, Macuse is the one to look at. If you are on macOS 13 or 14, or your day runs through Outlook, Teams and Slack as well as Apple Mail, LMCP covers more ground than anything else here and is free. If you want free and open source, and Mail is not what you came for, iMCP.
