How to connect boltai to apple imessage

Pomeroy lists the assistants it finds on this Mac, so install BoltAI first if it is not there yet.

    Download Pomeroy and switch on Apple iMessage.

    Open the download, drag Pomeroy into Applications, and open it. Pomeroy opens a setup window listing every app it can connect. There is no macOS prompt for Messages. Instead, a file dialog opens and you hand Pomeroy the one file Messages keeps your conversations in. Pomeroy keeps a read-only bookmark to it and never asks for Full Disk Access.

    Press Set up beside BoltAI.

    Pomeroy puts the configuration on your clipboard. In BoltAI, open Settings › Plugins, press +, paste, and save. There is no restart: choose Reload Config from the ⋯ menu.

    Paste it into BoltAI.

    Paste the configuration into BoltAI › Settings › Plugins › + (then ⋯ › Reload Config). In BoltAI, open Settings › Plugins and pomeroy is listed. Enable it for a chat and the tools appear.

    Try “Find the message with the door code.” and a real answer comes back.

Can BoltAI read my Messages?

Yes. Once you switch Messages on in Pomeroy, BoltAI can list your recent conversations, search the text of every message, and read one conversation's recent messages.

Can BoltAI reply to a message?

No. Pomeroy cannot send messages, so it cannot either. It can draft a reply for you to copy into Messages and send yourself.

How does Pomeroy get access to Messages?

You hand it the one file Messages keeps your conversations in, through a normal macOS file dialog. Pomeroy keeps a read-only bookmark to that file and never asks for Full Disk Access. Switch Messages off and the bookmark is all it loses.

Is it safe to give BoltAI access to iMessage?

It is as safe as pasting the same messages into BoltAI yourself. Pomeroy reads only the one file you picked, keeps a read-only bookmark to it, and has no tool that can send, so it cannot reply as you or be talked into it. What BoltAI reads becomes part of your conversation with BoltAI, the same as text you paste in, so ask about the messages you would be happy to paste.

Is this the same as Anthropic's iMessage plugin?

No. Anthropic's iMessage plugin is for Claude Code: it reads the Messages database directly, needs Full Disk Access for your Terminal, and sends replies through Messages so you can text BoltAI from your phone. Pomeroy is a separate app, made by Joe Saunderson and not by Anthropic. It reads only the one file you pick, never asks for Full Disk Access, and cannot send anything.

BoltAI does not show Pomeroy's tools.

Then press Set up again in Pomeroy, under Settings › Assistants: every way Pomeroy sets an assistant up is safe to run twice. Then check that the app you asked about is switched on in Pomeroy: an app that is off serves no tools. Pomeroy's menu bar shows whether BoltAI is connected right now.
