How to connect zed to apple mail

Pomeroy lists the assistants it finds on this Mac, so install Zed first if it is not there yet.

    Download Pomeroy and switch on Apple Mail.

    Open the download, drag Pomeroy into Applications, and open it. Pomeroy opens a setup window listing every app it can connect. macOS asks whether Pomeroy may control Mail, which is how one Mac app reads another's mail. The prompt names Pomeroy, and nothing is requested until you flip the toggle.

    Press Set up beside Zed.

    Zed's settings file allows comments, and Pomeroy will not rewrite a file it cannot leave byte for byte as you wrote it, so it puts the block on your clipboard for you to paste.

    Paste it into Zed.

    Paste the configuration into ~/.config/zed/settings.json. In Zed, open the agent panel's settings and Pomeroy is listed under context servers, with its tools. You may need to restart Zed.

    Ask Zed something.

    Try “Find the flight confirmation from March and tell me the times.” and a real answer comes back.

Can Zed read my Apple Mail?

Yes. Once you switch Mail on in Pomeroy, Zed can list your mailboxes, read messages, and search your mail. Searches cover subjects and senders, and message bodies through an index built and kept on your Mac.

Can Zed send email for me?

No. Pomeroy has no way to send, reply, or forward, so Zed cannot be talked into it. If you want a reply written, Zed can draft the words and you send them yourself.

Is it safe to connect Zed to Apple Mail?

Pomeroy reads your mail on your Mac and sends nothing to a Pomeroy server. What Zed reads becomes part of your conversation, the same as text you paste in. Mail starts switched off, and you can switch it off again at any time. Pomeroy is an independent app, not made by Anthropic.

Zed does not show Pomeroy's tools.

Try restarting Zed; its documentation does not say whether it reloads on its own. Then press Set up again in Pomeroy, under Settings › Assistants: every way Pomeroy sets an assistant up is safe to run twice. Pomeroy's menu bar shows whether Zed is connected right now.
